Rising from the surf alongside her father, the Philippine sea goddess, a young girl was born. The wind would blow just right, the waves would churn just right, the sun would shine just right to create the perfect wave. Her name was Sita. The wave would be the perfect height, the perfect shape, the perfect timing, and the perfect width. She would land on her head, and the men would kill for that moment. They would call it divine.
With Sita, as my father’s firstborn child, would be seven brothers and one sister. The family would move from island to island, leaving behind fields and homes to make way for the next palm plantation to be cultivated. The children would be taken to the city and raised. “Education is the first step to liberation,” they would say, raising their glass as high as they could.
As a girl I was allowed to help with the harvest as much as possible. This was 1942. We would drive to an island to chop down palm trees. It was a labour of love. Palm oil was still a novel food. Palm trees were too old and dangerous. Our method was to chop the trees down with a chainsaw. I think one of them got loose and came crashing down onto the houses below, some of which were no longer functional.
A loud cracking sound would echo through the village, as palm trunks and wood flew everywhere, bursting balloons and sending water balloons sailing across the floor. This was the rural Philippines in the era before electricity when people still used bamboo hoes and wooden planks for walls and roofs.
As we made our way home, I would climb aboard our crude wooden boat and work the sails. The Philippine sea was so beautiful. I would watch the sun sink behind the islands, and marvel at how close I was to the shore. I would look to the horizon and see a long red line of land running from Manila to Manila. In my mind, I pictured the line as representing a long red line of military fortifications extending across the island.
We would always stop on a small island to collect palm fruit. This island was named “Island Grande.” The trees were so thick on this island that we had to anchor to draw a path through them. I loved this task, as it gave me an excuse to climb aboard our boat and help work the sails. This was a small tropical island, only about a mile wide. The main island was larger than any of the others. We named this larger island “Island Grande II.”
With palm fruit in hand, we would sail across the island. On my 12 foot boat, I would climb aboard the small boat that did not yet have a mast, and work the sails. I would marvel at the sheer size of this island and wonder how I would manage to get there on the narrow side boat. We would anchor off an island, and I would start unloading the boat. This would require a lot of hard work. I would unload the boat, and get on the back of the larger boat, and work the sails. In moments I would be off again, this time with a huge load of palm fruit, bound for market.
I would spend the next several days unloading and getting the boat ready for market. In this way, we would sail the island for a couple of hundred miles, and return to the market town near Manila.
On our return trip, we would stop frequently to land in Manila. We would land in Davao, where the market would be nearing completion. From there we would head back to Manila where we would unload and get the boat ready for another journey.
The Philippines has many places to explore. I would recommend a visit to the famous Baguio Nature Park, the largest nature park in the Philippines, and a must-see for nature lovers. We would take a few hours to wander through the trails and woods in Baguio. While there we would visit the local village, a place untouched by civilization. I would recommend visiting the small town of Baguio, with a world-famous old village, and some neat shopping. After returning to Manila, we would take a flight to Cebu City. We would spend the night in Davao City, a paradise on wheels.
